Most people don't know what to do with their old cell phones when they upgrade, so they put them in a drawer and forget about them, or worse yet, throw them in the garbage for disposal. Old monitors, game systems and other electronic items find their way to closets or basements and serve no useful purpose... until now.

What it actually means to be Green?
Consumer Electronics Exchange cares deeply about our environment. It is, after all, our business. But it gets much more personal than that.
Among the founders of our company you will find hobbies and interests outside of work that are quite literally outside activities. Our founders and employees enjoy marathons, triathlons, surfing, snowboarding, skiing, hiking, mountain biking, fishing and many other outdoor activities. But what we enjoy most is passing on our love for the outdoors to our children. Much of the pride we take in our work here at CExchange is the fact that we are helping to keep our environment clean so that people can safely enjoy the great outdoors now and well into the future. We understand that there is considerable confusion around e-waste and which "electronics recycling" companies you can trust. So please do your research, know who you are giving your electronic device to and where it goes from there.
So What Does CExchange Do with Your Electronic Device?
Most electronic devices we receive from consumers, retailers and manufacturers are refurbished so they can be repurposed and reused. This reduces the amount of raw materials needed to manufacture new products and helps to conserve our natural resources. For the electronics that can't be refurbished we provide them to ECS Refining. ECS is an e-Steward, one of North America's most Responsible Recyclers that upholds the Electronics Recycler's Pledge of True Stewardship - the World's Most Rigorous Environmental and Social Justice Criteria for Recycling e-Waste. ECS adheres to all state and federal environmental regulations and complies with ISO 14001 environmental management standards ensuring that no hazardous waste will be improperly disposed.
The E-waste crisis introduction in the USA today.
• Electronic equipment and gadgets are the fastest growing waste stream in many countries. For many, electronics are part of modern life cell phones, laptops, TVs and a growing number of gadgets.
• Every year we buy new, updated equipment to support our needs -there are upwards of 300 million computers and one billion cell phones produced every year.
• All of these electronics become obsolete or unwanted, often within 2-3 years of purchase. This global mountain of waste is expected to continue growing 8% per year, indefinitely (BCC Research).
• The rapid obsolescence of gadgets combined with the astronomically high demand for new technology has created mountains of e-waste. In fact, e-waste is the fastest growing waste stream our society produces.
e-Stewards compared to other standards
As the problems associated with the relatively new electronics waste stream come to light, various programs are emerging to help customers, recyclers, governments and others navigate the complex and sometimes shady recycling industry. The challenge is to understand the differences between the various programs so you can make an informed choice. With so much at stake – legal liability, brand name, and long term and devastating impacts on health, water and air – it’s critical to recognize the differences
• The certification, which was developed by the Basel Action Network in conjunction with industry, government and nonprofit stakeholders, is based on a pledge by electronics users and recyclers to:
• Eliminate exports of hazardous e-wastes to developing countries;
• Halt the dumping of such wastes in municipal landfills or incinerators
• Cease the use of captive prison populations to manage toxic e- wastes
• Certification requires recyclers to protect customer data throughout the recycling process
• Protect the health and safety of workers in electronics recycling facilities.
What Is Dangerous About eWaste?
Substances found in consumer electronics include such dangerous waste as arsenic, lead, cadmium, and beryllium which have a high risk of leeching into water sources, polluting the air, and contaminating the soil if disposed of improperly. It is estimated that over 100 million mobile phones are tossed into landfills each year, representing a tremendous risk to the environment and to our health. Of course, that's just mobile phones. When you add in all the other personal electronics (nearly all of which have batteries) the problem becomes much worse.
R3 Mobile Phone and Electronic Device Trade in Program
Reduce, Recycle, Reuse
CExchange adheres to all three aspects of the three "R's" as promoted by the Environmental Protection Agency.
· Reduce the amount and toxicity of trash you discard
CExchange works with manufacturers, retailers and consumers to reduce the amount of e-waste by accepting many different kinds of consumer electronics products (and the list grows longer everyday) from across the country.
· Reuse containers and products
CExchange reuses, repairs, and refurbishes most of the electronics that we receive thereby reducing the amount of raw materials needed to manufacturer new devices and helping to conserve our natural resources.
· Recycle everything that isn't reused
NO LANDFILL: 100% RECYCLING!! CExchange will never directly or indirectly allow consumer electronics products that we receive to ever be sent to landfills, domestically or internationally.
No Export Policy
We hope that you have seen or read the news stories about unscrupulous recyclers who ship hundreds of thousands of pounds of electronic waste to third world countries to be broken down using methods that are hazardous for the workers and for the environment. At CExchange, no electronics device will be exported for recycling.
We appreciate the opportunity to be your electronics recycler but if you do not recycle with us, please recycle responsibly with a reputable firm that shares our commitment to the environment.
